The Discussion Series-01: "Green Chemistry & Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Discussion Series-01 on “Green Chemistry & Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was successfully conducted on Monday, 24th July 2023, from 10.00 AM to 11.00 AM in Department of Chemistry, University of Jaffna.
The event was organized by the Chemical Society and it aimed to enlighten the participants about the crucial connection between green chemistry and sustainable development goals. The speaker for the session was Prof. Nirusha Thavarajah, an esteemed Associate Professor, Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences, University of Toronto Scarborough.
Less Plastic Movement: National Campaign
A collaboration between the Chemical Society of the University of Jaffna, the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development of the Open University of Sri Lanka, the Zero Plastic Movement forum of the University of Jaffna, and World Visions from Chavakachcheri has led to a successful volunteering project called the “Less Plastic Movement: National Campaign”. Around 60 passionate volunteers from the University of Jaffna participated in the project in Pannai (Fort), Jaffna, intending to collect plastics, polythenes, and PET bottles that contribute to environmental pollution. Their hard work resulted in the collection of over 20 garbage bags filled with plastic waste, demonstrating their dedication to creating a positive impact and addressing the issue of plastic pollution in the community
Workshop on AI based Chrome Extensions
A workshop on AI-based chrome Extension was successfully conducted on Monday, 30th May 2023, from 4.00 PM to 5.00 PM in the Department of Chemistry, University of Jaffna. The moderator for the session was Prof. P. Iyngaran, Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Jaffna.
“The Best Chrome AI Extensions” was an insightful session where students were taught how AI-promoted extensions can be used efficiently to precisely complete their academic work. AI extensions like SciSpace Copilot, Compose AI, Wiseone, Perplexity, and Merlin were covered during this session. The students actively participated and gained knowledge about the above-mentioned AI extensions that can be used in Chrome.

Social Action Project-2020
Project Title: Give Back Life

Objective: To collect and up cycle the used PET bottles in the University Premises
There was no proper way to dispose of the PET bottles which were used in the University premises. These PET bottles take a long time to decay and cause pollution to the surrounding area. Chemical society, University of Jaffna joined hands with Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Limited in the program “Give Back Life”. Through which the PET bottles that are used by the University Students are collected and up cycled into valuable products such as brush, shoe, t shirts, broom etc. Up cycle is the best way to reduce PET bottles. The collected PET bottles are recycled by Eco Spindle. Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Limited provides bins to collect the PET bottles. Chemical Society, University of Jaffna created awareness among University Students and Staff regarding the PET bottles and the “Give Back Life” program. Posters and banners are displayed in the Notice boards and in the University premises. The Chemical Society ensures the safety and the number of bottles collected per month.
